If I Pass out… Can You Start the Caffiene IV?

Filed under: C*EYE*BER Fibers, Sheep and Wool, Sweet Sheep — mamae @ 8:55 am

Seriously… I am so wiped. I have not been to bed before 2 am since TUESDAY night.

I have run my poor Canadian friend into the ground with my last minute madness. She should have gotten a work visa is all I’m sayin’!

We went to DC / Alexandria, VA to drop off a huge order to Knit Happens (merino / tencel… love it) and the poor girl got to see our nation’s capital from the passenger side window of my Volkswagon Rabbit (turbo and paddle shifter) rental vehicle.

I was all like “there is the Washington Monument”… and she was all like “there is a car that you are going to hit..”

Some people I tell you!

I have been annoying Michelle with my new game for the weekend. I decided it was best to deal with my anxiety for the weekend by labeling the emotion I am feeling at the top of my lungs. For a full 24 hours I have been intermittently shouting out words like

“WORRIED!” “ANXIOUS!” “TIRED!” “ANGRY!”

Michelle has been shouting out words like

“EAR PLUGS!” “DON’T CARE!” “ZIP IT!”… how rude? right?

What is our schedule for the weekend you may ask?

Tonight, FRIDAY MAY 2:

OPEN HOUSE at the Warehouse. Starts at 4 ends around 11. Details are here.

SATURDAY, MAY 3:

8am - 1pm at the Cloverhill booth. Main barn, D2,D3

Come say hi to me and the gang!

7pm -11pm Ravelry party at the Sheraton in Columbia.

SUNDAY, MAY 4:

Aimlessly wandering the fairgrounds yelling at the top of my lungs

“COWBOY!” “GET BACK HERE!” “1 ……… 2 ……. YOU DONT WANT ME TO GET TO….. 3 !!!!!”

See you at MDSW! (or miss you at MDSW!)

WHOOOOOOOPIEEEEEEEEEEEE!

Mission VERY Possible

Filed under: Sweet Sheep, Uncategorized — mamae @ 8:24 am

I am on the airplane writing this…partly because I have an hour to kill and partly because my brain is swimming with ideas and possibility. I figured a recap of my first solo business trip as fiber artist should start on the plane ride home.

Michelle, my friend and accomplice, picked me up in the Buffalo airport on Friday morning. Our mission, as we chose to accept it, was to:

  1. Find Lettuce Knit
  2. Eat and sleep as little as possible in a 36 hour period.
  3. Sell LOTS of yarny goodness.
  4. NOT spend more than I made on yarny goodness.
  5. Profess our LOVE for yarn, fiber, and fiber-philes as much as we could possibly stand it

Mission 1: Lettuce Knit Status: Completed

lettuce knit.JPG

We drove straight to Toronto so the yarn tourist in me could go to Lettuce Knit. That shop is pretty sweet. I bought me some yarn and a Lexie Barnes pouch (for business receipts, of course). It is in an area of Toronto that really reminds me of the ethnic and funky neighborhoods in NYC. Lots and lots of cultures moving in a rhythm that flows together, wraps, unwinds and connects again. I loved it. The difference between this area and the ones that I speak of in the States, is the sheer fact that people live a modestly comfortable existence. There appears to be the feeling of Haight –Ashbury , or Greenwich Village pre-million dollar lofts. I really, really loved it.

That quick jaunt into Toronto was pretty much all I saw of Toronto. The CN Tower on the way in and the way out. The Maple Leafs play hockey in an arena that butts right up against the highway. My god if there is a car accident during a game the player might get injured!

Destination: Sweet Sheep Central.

DSCN04332007-09-08.JPG

I was greeted by the lovely and talented Oscar (who is really named Simon), the guard cat, who put me through another customs check when I walked in the door. (He is VERY chatty… the staunch CA customs officer-lady could learn from him…. She really put us through our paces crossing the border).

Michelle casually gave me a tour of her very lovely home and ended it with the magna carta. The big lebowski… the piece de resistance.

She took me to the store.

Mission 2/3:Profess our LOVE for yarn, fiber, and fiber-philes as much as we could possibly stand it and NOT spend more than I made on yarny goodness. Status: In-Progress

yarntini.JPG

(Yarntini goodness…)

OH.MY.GOD.

I fell to my knees (LITERALLY) at what she has. Stuff I DID NOT KNOW ABOUT HER HAVING. (Disclaimer: she probably mentioned having those yarns. Ask Coleen if I actually listen to my friends when they tell me things ;P )

As I was inappropriately fondling her yarns and digging through her inventory, and thinking of all possible ways to justify MAJOR stash enhancement, I could not believe the sheer bounty of talented fiber artists that are out there. sometimes Mama-E operates in the vacuum of sleep deprivation and occasionally comes out from under the rock in which she makes her home. ( I will do a WHOLE seperate post on the Hand dyers that I adore!)

Michelle tore me away from the yarn to load the car and head for our next mission.

Mission 5: Sell Lots of Yarny Goodness : Part I

We made our way through Toronto traffic and crawled to Kitchener. We unloaded the goods… took stock of our display possibilities… freaked out a tad…… and made a list for Walmart. Delirious and starving (eating is very overrated…) we headed to the big box hell. Blaring fluorescents and processed foods galore. We made our way around the SUPER Walmart at least 2x before we could find the items on the list.

On to the hotel…. and our first major obstacle.

Now… when you make a reservation at a hotel you don’t roll up after HOURS and HOURS of driving (Michelle was on the road at 6 am and picked me up in Buffalo NY) the last thing you expect is for them to say your room is occupied.

WHAT???!!! Occupied? Hmmm… her name on the reservation. Someone else in the room. WTF??

Ok.. there was no way in hell we were sleeping anywhere but there. And the newly employed desk clerk-with-no-backup-help found that out when I let my “Irish” flare up. I actually helped the quivering girl go to our room and check for occupants.

Yeah… turns out…. the moron who worked before her did not check the guests out of the room when they actually left over 12 hours before.

We get into the room… crash and are up about 4.5 hours later.

I shower (very good thing… Michelle has VERY specfic rules for her employees regarding hygiene) and wake her up so she can do the same.

I put a little snack in the microwave. I turn on the coffeemaker (for the hotel LIED about the 24 hour coffee thing) and you hear *POP*…

and then darkness.

Michelle says: “Mama-E, you broke the hotel!!!!”

Now how the hell can I break a hotel fuse??? Come on now… aren’t there at least 100+ people staying there (they told us it was full the night before when someone was supposedly occupying our room)? How the hell can I BLOW A FUSE????

We were at least 30 minutes behind schedule ( with a free hotel stay after I chatted with the morning guest services manager).

Mission 5: Sell Lots of Yarny Goodness Part II Status : Completed

We roll up to the Bingemans and greet the FABULOUS folks at the Kitchener-Waterloo Knitters Guild. We find our space and do the fastest setup known to mankind.

We went from nothing to:

Mission 2/3:Profess our LOVE for yarn, fiber, and fiber-philes as much as we could possibly stand it and NOT spend more than I made on yarny goodness. Revisited

I made out with these amazing buttons. They are hand-made and exquisite! AB Originals from Rockwood, Ontario.

buttons.JPG

I have asked John to make me something special… and if all goes well some of my Christmas shopping is underway!

khaul.JPG

I purchased:

1- fair trade basket

1- 1lb bag of wool/seacell roving

1- 110 g skein of handpainted sock yarn from Lindenhoff Wool Mill.

1- 4oz skein of wool/alpaca laceweight (natural chocolate color) from Lindenhoff

1- thrummed mitten kit ( I was in CANADA People!) from Lindenhoff.

1- 4oz skein of Yarntini varieagated

1 dozen wood buttins

Whew! mission accomplished.

Ongoing Mission: Eat and sleep as little as possible in a 36 hour period

I think …maybe 6 hours of the total 36 we slept. We ate out 1 time… (Subway: my love for you will never die!)

I flew back home ( I miss you already Michelle!) to my family. I missed them terribly!

I was greeted at BWI by my boy and my wonderful husband. It is nice to be home!

DSCN04362007-09-09.JPG

The cowboy had to wear his new Team Canada “soccer boy” outfit (changed in the car!).

Oh! and one last thing….

Michelle says that I never post my knitting anymore.

Here is my Fugl in action. I will finish by Rhinebeck. I will finish by Rhinebeck….

I love Kitchener… and thank you to each and every one of you that came out! we had so much fun. See you next year!

Travelin’ Bag

Filed under: Sweet Sheep, Uncategorized — mamae @ 9:59 pm

So… believe it or not… I still have a day job.

Yup… I know. Crazy, but true.

And, I had an all-day event that I needed to attend today. The kind where you sit and wait for folks to come to you. And you knit… and wait… and knit.

I had a mitten on the needles (because, as Lolly pointed out, it is 50′ F outside.. that is 10′ C for you guys up north). I needed a bag to put it in.

bag.jpg

This little one was aching to be mine. No worries… there are some more where that came from. (Excuse the crappy cell phone pic)

I got some Malabrigo from my enabler in the post today.
mm44_geranio.jpg

I am going to make this with it.

I am soooo excited. Sweater land here I come! I can not wait to buy the buttons!

Speaking of my enabler… the girl went and got HANDMAIDEN in her store.

OH MY GOD! Hand-freaking-maiden.

I love thee…. OK, now I know that I am in trouble. I bet I will be working in trade to pay off the tremendous amounts that I could buy. Go get them before I do. They will go fast!

Off to whip up some more bags!

UPDATE :

She is on the move again! Looky here… that is her on my mess of a desk with some Malabrigo!

Snow?? PLEASE!!

Filed under: C*EYE*BER Fibers, Sweet Sheep, Uncategorized — mamae @ 1:36 pm

The air has smelled like snow for the past few days. The chill has been biting. My pipes have frozen and unfrozen a few times… but yet, I still want snow.

I want a snow day with the cowboy. A “ja-jama” or “Footie ja-jama” day where we watch too much tv, play outside for awhile, then snuggle in. A day where you are prevented from going anywhere and you can’t find any distractions that take you away from your family. (Ok.. I lie… I would blog or do anything on the internet if the cowboy HAS to watch the CARS movie for the 2001st time).

We are settling back in after a stressful week. I am trying to motivate myself to do work.( I know it is noon. I know that it is Monday.)

I had a little soiree’ for my friend CAm at the studio on Saturday night. The usual suspects arrived for CAm’s Sweet 16 party. There was knitting, food, and champagne. Great fun to be had and a great way to christen the new space. Fun was had all around. I left the party at 1 am… woot! Good thing that it takes 2 minutes to drive home. I was tired!
Updates Anyone?

  • I have scheduled an intro to dye class for March 3rd, 2007 There are 5 spaces available. The class will take place from 11 am - 6pm. We will explore dyeing with kool aid, wilton dyes, and acid dyes. All dyes are included in the class fee.. you bring your choice of fiber! We can do any weight yarn or spinning fiber that consists of protein fiber (wool, silk). No cotton or plant based fibers.
  • The Twisted Knitters Fiber Club is continuing for 3 more months! Spots are very limited and are selling out fast. You can get more information and your spot here.
  • I have shipped a BIG BOX of yarn to The Sweet Sheep. New exclusives and colorways will be ready to purchase as soon as next week.
  • Gardiner Yarns is also getting a shipment that includes the Margene Sock yarn and a GYW signature that will knock your socks off (LOL). Check out Chrissy’s latest interweave pattern here.
  • I will be updating the warehouse with new yarns in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for the email that will announce the date/time.

I think that is it. Let it snow!!

Another Friday

Filed under: C*EYE*BER Fibers, Sweet Sheep, Uncategorized — mamae @ 10:01 am

It is another Friday. My mind is cluttered with possibility. I have many things to do for work, for yarn work, for a clean house, etc. But, I love the feeling of possibility I get on Fridays.

The weekend is here. Finally, a weekend that appears free of travel and ailments. The cowboy has plans with Daddy tomorrow morning. I have plans with a mop and a broom. But that is not today.

I am so excited about some plans that are in the works. It would be really premature to announce them. But partnerships are forming. And, as Martha says, “It’s a good thing.”

I want to give big props to my girl, Julia, for her spot in Deb Stoller’s 2008 calendar. Go on sister! I am so happy for you!

The possibilities are so endless when you team up with other crafts(wo)men. I love collaborating with other artists. I feel like we push each other to get better at the craft, get better at thinking outside the box, bring more creative an innovative ideas to the table. Awesome. I am in awe of some of the folks that I am working with and making contact with.

I never thought that my yarn obsession craft would take me here. I am amazed….. and truly very grateful.
So.. another Friday has come. Along with Fridays come the weekend update:

  1. The Twisted Sisters Fiber Club Has sold. All spots gone! Thanks everyone. You all are great!
  2. The WINTER SOCK CLUB IS ALMOST SOLD. Email me for your spot. Going… going….
  3. The SWEET SHEEP SOCK CLUB is in route to the 30 participants in the club. I will post a picture once I am sure that they have all received it.
  4. I am going to start updating the warehouse 1x per month with single skein and fiber offerings. Please sign up for the mailing list if you want to get advance notification. I will email the mailing list at least 1 day before the update and before I announce on the blog.

Have a great weekend!
