So, I am going to salute this Mercury retrograde with my middle fingers.
Why? Because I have a theme song. I do. It’s true. My theme song is “SEXY BACK” by my friend JT. I kid you not.
So, in light of all that has gone wrong apparently with my life and yours… I thought that I would have a little contest.
The “F*@K RETROGRADE:WE HAVE A THEME SONG” contest.
Tell me why your theme song is what it is and some story about it.
Wanna know what 1 lucky winner wins? a 4 month subscription to the CRAZY 8’s club. NO JOKE. I need to pull the good karma train out of the station.
Here is an example of an entry” Sexy Back is Mama-E’s theme song because JT makes her crazy! It is my ring tone for my phone… and one day while visiting the cowboy’s pre-school class the phone rang, and rang, and a room full of 20 four year olds started getting their groove on while the phone hid in the bottom of my purse… the teachers tried to hide their laughter with little success.”
Now.. your turn. Songs and stories can be left in the comments. Winner will be drawn on Tuesday!

My theme song is my ringtone too - it’s actually the theme from Peanuts (technically called Linus and Lucy). Whenever I hear it, it makes me want to do a little Snoopy happy dance!
February 9th, 2008 at 9:15 pm
Margaritaville by Jimmy Buffett is my theme song - it just puts me in a good mood, no matter what. I love to crank it up in the car and sing along to the top of my lungs. The best though - playing while drinking a homemade margarita made with some fine tequila. Best way to end a day…

My theme song is America from the broadway show RENT’s soundtrack. It is the one song that I can sing at the top of my lungs while in the car and actually feel better about whatever is bothering me. Great song, plus it is totally theraputic!

My Theme song would probably be All She Want To Do Is Dance, by Don Henley. I’ve been known to dance around the house for no reason. I dunno, I just like to dance!!
February 9th, 2008 at 9:35 pm
Erin!!!
That is my theme song and my ring tone!!
February 9th, 2008 at 10:40 pm
My theme song is “Closer to Fine” by the Indigo Girls!
I try to live life like these lyrics:
“…and the best thing youve ever done for me
Is to help me take my life less seriously
Its only life after all…”
It’s only life afterall sister - try not to let the little things stress you out and appreciate the beauty of the world.

My ringtone is “Flight of the Bumblebee.” It pretty much sums up my hectic and fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants kind of life. I don’t know what would be my theme song, but I’d like to have Louis Armstrong’s, “What a Wonderful World” played at my funeral.
February 10th, 2008 at 12:16 am
Superfreak by Rick James! Because I just like to do my own thing.

I think my theme song right now (can I have more than one?) is “The Hat” by Ingrid Michaelson. It’s kind of depressing, because I just got dumped (by that boy, you met him, he cheated, long story), and the song is about how it’s Christmas time and someone else is knitting things for the boy, and the chorus talks about how “we were 17 again” and he was her first love.
For whatever reason, while it can make me cry, it’s kind of comforting to know that other people get through crap like this, and there’s life after the shitty ex.
I didn’t mean to be all depressing. Yikes. I’m sorry. Erin, you’re awesome.
February 10th, 2008 at 2:12 am
My theme song is also my ring tone…’I Want It All’ by Queen.
Do I really need to explain why it’s my theme song? I think the title of the song says it for me.
February 10th, 2008 at 2:22 am
Schizophrenic Psycho is my theme song right now… it’s a reminder to myself that it’s not just me, because the world really IS going crazy. lol
February 10th, 2008 at 9:16 am
“Just another manic Monday” is my them song!
I work full time and run a rescue for Jack Russells! I have between 6 and 8 dogs in my house at any given time…plus the one in other foster homes.
Every day is a manic Monday…too much to do, not enough time, not enough sleep, too much traffic! When I finally find something to wear, it’s covered in hair and doggie paw prints before I can get out the door!
But I love Jack Russell Terriers - maybe because they are so happy and energetic? I wouldn’t have it any other way because my 3 dogs were rescues…and I think to myself if someone hadn’t been running a rescue, I would have never found them!

We have a “family” theme song - Love Shack by the B-52’s, which we sing at the top of our lungs whenever or wherever we hear it, and search for on every juke box. Yes, it’s also my ring tone. The highlight, seeing the B-52’s in concert a few years ago, even my then 20-year-old too-cool son could actually be seen rocking and a rollin’.
February 10th, 2008 at 9:42 am
My theme song has to be “Sweet Child O’ Mine” by Guns ‘n’ Roses.
I have really long hair, like 3 feet long, and four sisters with hair as long or longer. So we all dance and try to do the Axl Rose slither while slinging our hair and head banging.
Always makes me happy when I think about being goofy like that with my sisters.

” I Want To Be Evil” by Eartha Kitt is my theme song. When people think I can’t do something, have put me down, have pissed me off, I feel frumpy/awkward or the day just hasn’t gone the way I wanted it to I crank this. With lyrics like
I wanna be evil, I wanna spit tacks
I wanna be evil, and cheat at jacks
and…
And in the theatre I want to change my seat
Just so I can step on everybody’s feet
you can’t help feel better after singing it at the top your lungs and slinking around the house like a sexy kitten. Even though I wouldn’t actually do any of the things she suggests in the song (I swear!) it gives me that sense of getting back. Also Eartha has one of the most AMAZING voices and I love all the songs on that album, not surprisingly called “Purrr-fect.”
As a side note, my ringtone is is the Doctor Who theme and that makes me feel uber-geeky… and I love it! ;-p
February 10th, 2008 at 10:13 am
My theme song is “Kate” by Ben Folds Five. My husband actually put it on a CD for me when we first started dating and said that whenever he heard it he thought of me (it’s okay to feel nauseous now).
I liked the song before I even met my hubby. It’s just a happy, upbeat song that makes me happy when I hear it!
February 10th, 2008 at 10:39 am
Can I enter this? ’cause I really wanted to join crazy 8s club. My granny and I used to play crazy 8s when i’d visit her in texas every other summer. ah, good times.
okay, theme song - i think i have 2, depending on the situation. the first, of course, and i can’ believe nobody has mentioned it yet, is the gambler by the illustrious Kenny Rogers. I can’t even pick a verse to tell you, they’re all so good and every one of them speaks to me, no YELLS at me. Look up those lyrics and tell me you couldn’t sing them everyday about something going on in your life. I mean really, there is always time for countin’ when the dealins done. werd.
My second, and just as important to me, is Vanilla Ice’s Ice Ice baby. Yep, because you know me — I Light up a stage and wax a chump like a candle! and also, there are always the girlies on standby, wavin’ just to say hi. yep yep.

Oh yeah, Mercury Retrograde sucks big time!!!! As a Gemini, I always know when Mercury is retrograde and I always have a huge string of bad luck - usually everything around me breaks. This time, however, has been the worst ever retrograde. Two weeks ago, our recently adopted little kitty got sick. He’d have good days where we thought he was on the mend, and bad days where we had a hard time staying positive about him. When I saw on your blog that Mercury had been retrograde for two weeks, I wasn’t surprised in the least. Sadly, on Friday night, he let us know he couldn’t fight any longer. Yesterday, we had to help him move on. It was the saddest thing and one of the deepest pains I’ve ever felt. I HATE MERCURY RETROGRADE.
So, although it’s impossible to feel happy right now, Michael Bublé’s version of “Sway” always makes me dance and sing at the top of my lungs. I think of Pea and I doing the cha cha to it in our ballroom class. Screw you, Mercury, I’m going to SWAY!
February 10th, 2008 at 11:22 am
My theme song is also my former ringtone (I haven’t bought it for my new phone yet) - Call on me by Eric Prydz. Apparently this is a remix of a song from the 80s (possibly Chicago or Journey or one of those bands…I swear I used to know this).
But anyway, my reasoning is that (a) nothing will cheer you up like really horrible euro dance/pop/trash (b) every time I hear it I think of the spoof video that was one (at the US naval academy…gotta love buff boys joking around and making a video to get school spirit up before the army/navy game - which of course turned into viral videos at their best) (c) every time I hear it I also think of the REAL video which was even more hilarious (women in really ridiculous 80s style spandex workout clothes with one guy in veeeery short shorts).
Every time my phone rang (and as soon as I get the ringtone back, every time it will ring) everyone around me bursts out laughing. And quite frankly with everything being as weird as it is lately - a good laugh is always helpful.

I cannot say that I have always had one favorite song, but one that I have always loved since I was a child is “Daniel” by Elton John. I used to dream that I had an older brother (I was the oldest) who would look out for me and take care of me! Oh well, I was an odd child! But I still love that song.
February 10th, 2008 at 12:59 pm
I would have to say right now that mine is “Taking Chances” by Celine Dion. I’ve done a fair bit of that during my life and I love to belt that song out in the car!!
February 10th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
“The Angry American” by Toby Keith, cuz there’s just some days I want to put a boot in someone’s a** too.
February 10th, 2008 at 2:43 pm
Oh, I’d love to win a spot in the Crazy 8’s club.
If I had to pick just one song it would be Extraordinary by Liz Phair. It is such a rockin’ song to sing out loud in your car at the top of your voice and feel powerful. I often do so with my girls and, as we dance in the kitchen or sing in the car I hope that they get the message and believe that they are awesome.
“I am extraordinary, if you’d ever get to know me
I am extraordinary, I am just your ordinary
Average every day sane psycho
Supergoddess”
February 10th, 2008 at 9:57 pm
I, like many of us Mercury Victims have more than one theme song. My current 2– depending on the polarity of my psychoses are– “If I knew you were coming, I’d have baked a cake”…http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lkuv2V9UMo8
and of course– The Imperial March, which i KNOW you are all too familiar with. So, because I am having a particularly crappy day, and because I really want to win, I am leaving you all with this absolutely genius version played by HANDFARTS!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2aIjPJtsv4
I crap you not. PLEASE promise you will watch the whole thing– the ending is sublime. I almost had a heart attack laughing so hard. I was crying. It’s ok if I don’t win. You gave me that nice sheep butt glass.
I like you. Glad the time of suffering is almost over. I might drink bleach if not. hugs and kisses– Darth Sylvia Plath

I like the upbeat tempo and joy exuded in Madonna’s “Cherish.” Whenever it’s playing, I can’t help but to be cheerful with the toes all a-tapping! =)
I hope your retrograde retrogrades.
Warm hugs to you, my friend!

My theme song these days is “Mama Weer All Crazee Now” by Quiet Riot.
“Ma mama weer all crazee now
(Mama, mama I’m going crazee. Help me)
Ma mama weer all crazee now
(Oh help me I’m going wild and crazee)
Ma mama weer all crazee now
I say
Ma ma ma ma mama weer all crazee”
I’m a single mom of 3, my oldest is a Senior in High School and my youngest is in kindergartern. I’m a full time college student (education major). We’re all nuts around here.
Oh..and my daughter apparently thinks my theme song is “I like Big Butts” because that’s the ring tone that rings when I call her. *cough*
February 11th, 2008 at 12:35 am
Just one to define my entire being? but I have so many that I go to for certain things. Rainy Days and Mondays for instance always makes me smile when I am having a bad day. Or Superstar. I am seriously in love with the Carpenters and have been for what seems like ever. And yes it is possible to only be in my 30s and want to be just like Karen and no-one-remembers-his-name-ever brother (minus the eating disorder that is).
Right now I am very very very very drawn to the song Anyone else but you by The Moldy Peaches. It’s on the Juno soundtrack and it is very much how I define myself with Tattoo Boyfriend. No matter what he is who I want to be with - even ifthe rest of the world thinks we are weird or ugly or whatever we are so very in tune that when I hear this song it makes me smile. And it makes those couple of minutes a little better as I wait to move out to MO to be with him.
Although really anything on that soundtrack is great.I am going to stop since I have listed more than one song here, but music is very important in my life - and one of the things that TB and I share with each other.

It’s pretty cliche, but my theme song is Helen Reddy’s “I Am Woman.” I’m going through a pretty difficult time right now, and this kind of strength and attitude is what I aspire to.
February 11th, 2008 at 1:19 pm
My theme song (95% of the time, anyway) is (like me) an oldie: “I am Woman” by Helen Reddy. Being the only female on a computer-geek team of 9 people can sometimes be challenging, but the guys tell outsiders that I’ve usually got them outnumbered
“Yes, I am wise, but it’s wisdom born of pain.
Yes, I’ve paid the price, but look how much I’ve gained.”
February 11th, 2008 at 2:44 pm
My theme song is My Sharona by The Knack…because there was this time when I was in high school that I thought it was really badass to date older guys. Mostly it was just a silly time in my life, but I used to drive around and listen to this song all the time.
These days I like to pretend I’m in Reality Bites whenever I hear it…it’s also a favorite kareoke song. However, only a chosen few (and I guess now, the whole internet) know about my not that sordid past,
February 11th, 2008 at 4:02 pm
My Theme Song is “It Takes a Mighty Good Man” by Saffire, Uppity Blues Women.
And it does take a mighty good man to be better than no man at all…
February 11th, 2008 at 6:31 pm
I think mine would be “When I get my” by Noam Weinstein. I have to laugh everytime I hear it, which is a lot with crazy assignments at the moment.
“everything’s gonna be much better
when i get my sh-t together
rich as a rose and free as a feather
when i get my sh-t together”
I try not to swear but four years of being at a primarly Dutch university taught me that shit is an acceptable and great swear word!
February 11th, 2008 at 9:05 pm
I can’t say that I have one song that relates to me all the time. Sometimes my theme song would be “B*tch” by Alanis Morrisette. Other times it’s “What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong. That song I would consider more of a theme song for me. It’s the one that my husband and I danced to at our wedding.
February 11th, 2008 at 10:50 pm
I could pick a lot of songs, but I think my theme song, based almost entirely on ringtone, is “Beautiful Day” by U2. It’s a good uplifting tune - in case I start to turn a little negative, it’s a nice little reminder. (It was also the first song played at our wedding, as our “Mr. & Mrs.” introduction song.
But if “Beautiful Day” doesn’t work, sometimes I just succumb and hum a few bars of “It Sucks to Be Me” from the show Avenue Q.
February 11th, 2008 at 10:59 pm
I have “Ding dong the witch is dead” from the Wizard of Oz just because it cracks me up. When the phone rings,it is fun to watch people try to place the music, and if they do they really laugh as well.
February 12th, 2008 at 9:33 am
“brick house” Commodores- yes it is my ring tone and yes it lets me know that I am a force of nature to be reconed with.
She’s a brick—-house
Mighty mighty, just lettin’ it all hang out
February 12th, 2008 at 9:35 am
Hugs Erin!
When my life is upturned I always sing, and I think you have heard me, lol:
I don’t care if I go crazy 123456
switch
crazy go I if care don’t I 654321
switch
or when things are looking up then I usually have:
“If you are happy and you know it” bouncing around.
While I don’t think I am a simple person these are super simple songs. Almost a mantra of sorts for the kid in me.
Jolene
February 12th, 2008 at 10:41 am
my go to song is “fine” by mary j. blige. its a great “pick me up” and a nice song to dance to! it is most def my theme song!
February 12th, 2008 at 7:17 pm
“MoonDance” by Van Morrison. Totally. David and I both love that song (both of our favorite) before we even met each other and when we heard it on the radio one day when we first started dating, we both said “That’s my favorite” at the same time. Yeah… cheezy I know
But that’s our theme song.
February 20th, 2008 at 6:37 am
“soul bossa nova” a la Austin Powers/Quincy Jones. My phone rang while doing a little training/presenting to a group of Japanese customers in NYC. broke the ice and everyone got relaxed. …and thanks for the post on Merc retrograde. it’s been tricky for me this time around as well.
