Crossing off the list

In the studio… thank god the weather broke (again). We hit almost 90 here in Charm City. That, my friends, is Indian Summer. It sucks. I was knitting a Lopi sweater (and finished the knitting part!) on the playground at the cowboy’s school today. The moms all shook their heads. I knew knitting my sweater in public, in a heatwave, would cause the weather to break. They should thank me dammit!

A lot of dyeing is going in here at chez’ mama. I have oooodles to do and am getting ooooodles done. It was way to hot to come here during the day… so again it is a late night here.

Custom and preorders are done and drying… wholesale orders are drying too. Clubs on their way…. busy, busy, mama.
The Crazy 8’s Club has 4 TWO!!!- 4month spots available for the taking. Go get them.

If you order within the next 24hours I will knock 10% off the price. I will send a refund via paypal.
What else?
Patricia and I are scheming up ways that I can infuse my sparkling personality into the cruise long distance. We have good ideas! Stay tuned.

Thanks to everyone who has emailed and commented with words of support. Your understanding of my inability to cruise to Alaska is very kind.

I’ll leave you with a taste of said sweater in it’s final stages:

The Best Mama I have….

Filed under: Sea Socks 08, Uncategorized, family — mamae @ 11:18 pm

I took the cowboy to taekwondo tonight. The master presented my boy with his white belt.

white belt.jpg

My boy beamed like I have never seen. I was a proud mama… watching her boy reveling in the joys of his accomplishment. I could never have imagined how happy this would make him. How happy it makes me to see him learn, and grow.

This parenting journey is so amazingly, gut wrenchingly, beautiful. The depths of the commitment and passion that I feel for my family can not be described. My son calls me “mama” when he is particularly at ease and feels happy. I am “mommy” all the time… but “mama” at the special times.
Tonight, after his belt presentation, he ran to me and thanked me for being “the best mama I have”.

In interest of passing muster in that general area, we have had to make some tough decisions regarding our lifestyle and our parenting focus. My beautiful boy has made some school transitions this year that we are still riding out…. and while taekwondo is something that he is finding great joy and accomplishment in… his new educational endeavors are still a work in progress.

For this reason, my D and I have made the executive decision to remain in Maryland while the amazing Sea Socks 2008 Cruise is taking in the wonders of the inside passage. The time away is too great for the boy and the distance is too great to leave him. I hope you all understand our choice…and know that it was not an easy one to make. Patricia is a trooper, being so gracious and understanding fully why we have pulled out of the cruise. Amy, Chrissy, and Brenda will have many things to teach you all… and I am sure that you will have a great time.

I will, however, be providing extra special yarn-love for your goody bags. You bet your skein I will!

So… I am trying to live up the the words of my baby by being his “best mama”he has and remembering that yarn is lasting… but my baby will only be four once.

The Times… They are a Changin’

Filed under: Uncategorized, family — mamae @ 12:12 am

Again… late night but cool in the studio. Thank God the weather broke. The heat up here can be slightly brutal. I always wondered why the galleries in SoHo went on holiday in August. Now I have lived it. My neighbor ( the painter) left for the summer and traded up for a hiatus in Brooklyn. At least she was hot but in NYC. (She has resumed her schedule here and I have resumed annoying her to no end with lots of noise and bad renditions of the “RENT” score and the Beatles).

There are so many things changing here at Chez Mama. Good changes, eventual life changes (my 35th birthday is in the beginning of October. I actually share a birthday with John Lennon… hence the Beatles I think), the cowboy has changed schools (multiple times), and a new schedule.

I am trying like hell to embrace it all, remember that my boy is really, really tired and anxious (hence the incessant whining), and that getting older is good. It is inevitable.

I tend to be of the mindset “Go Big or Go Home”…. It helps me take on life like this big bucking bronco that just wants to be ridden… wants to be tamed. Yeah, well.. I am over the tamed part right now. Buck away, buddy… I am hanging on.

So, that “go big or go home” thing….. Well….

Here is exhibit “A”:

haircut2007-09-18.JPG

haircut2007-09-18_2.JPG

I made the appointment for the Red Door Spa at 11 am…sat in the chair at 2pm and was fully coiffed by 4pm. I left a VERY big tip… the stylist had her work cut out for her ( I let go of at least 6 inches). I really like her… she is very pierced and multi-hair colored and in her early 20’s. She likes me because I am not an entitled wealthy 40-something that asks her is she does her hair like that because of Brittany Spears. I think we have a mutual affection for each other.

Exhibit “B”:

I also *gulp* started running. (I hesitate to tell you because that makes me accountable…)… but I am running. 3 days a week trying to build endurance for a 5k in the spring. I am tired of feeling like that is something that I can never do. I don’t love running… there are some folks out there that *heart* running big time. I am not trying to fool myself that I will love or feed off of it. I am just so freaking tired of feeling like I can’t do that. I pant… I feel like I am dying… but I try like hell. That is the point.

Exhibit “C”:

Again with the accountability…. I joined Weight Watchers. That’s right… I said it to the couple hundred folks (I can’t believe that you all add up to a couple hundred! Thanks!) who read this meandering journey of fiber, parenting, and nonsensical commentary. I am in week 3 and doing well. I am not going to give a pound count.. I am down a little and my clothes fit much better. I have been eternally grateful to the folks that I have connected with in the Ravelry Slimdown2tog group. I know a few folks in person and have made more imaginary friends!

So… the times they are a’changin’ here in Baltimore. Change is scary… but hopefully the change will provide some great results for all involved.

And… because I could not resist a gratuitous cowboy picture…..

Here is my baby in his Taekwondo uniform. He actually broke a damn wooden board. Crazy….

Come gather ’round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You’ll be drenched to the bone.
If your time to you
Is worth savin’
Then you better start swimmin’
Or you’ll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin’.

Come writers and critics
Who prophesize with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance won’t come again
And don’t speak too soon
For the wheel’s still in spin
And there’s no tellin’ who
That it’s namin’.
For the loser now
Will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin’.

Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don’t stand in the doorway
Don’t block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There’s a battle outside
And it is ragin’.
It’ll soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin’.

Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don’t criticize
What you can’t understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is
Rapidly agin’.
Please get out of the new one
If you can’t lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin’.

The line it is drawn
The curse it is cast
The slow one now
Will later be fast
As the present now
Will later be past
The order is
Rapidly fadin’.
And the first one now
Will later be last
For the times they are a-changin’.

Thanks Bob. And thanks to my dad who taught me about him….

Someone once told me….

Filed under: knitting — mamae @ 11:59 am

that it looks as if I don’t knit anymore.

Au contraire, monfraire! I do. I just can never find all of the components of my camera and batteries… and time….

but here are a few pictures of the current WIP’s:

sweatersleeve.JPG

Sleeve one of FUGL. That is body completed up to the point where the sleeves join…1 sleeve finished… casting on for sleeve two today.

handspun.JPG

190 yds of worsted weight handspun. Yup… I still spin. And it only took this 6 months to spin and ply (my wheel cries out of loneliness!)

dragonbag.JPG

A prototype knitting accessory bag. Or a tampon case… or pencils/pens. I think I will stick to the knitting accessory theory.

dragondetail.JPG

Here is the detail.

All very low quality photos… but at least there is evidence I do knit. Ok Michelle?

Mission VERY Possible

Filed under: Sweet Sheep, Uncategorized — mamae @ 8:24 am

I am on the airplane writing this…partly because I have an hour to kill and partly because my brain is swimming with ideas and possibility. I figured a recap of my first solo business trip as fiber artist should start on the plane ride home.

Michelle, my friend and accomplice, picked me up in the Buffalo airport on Friday morning. Our mission, as we chose to accept it, was to:

  1. Find Lettuce Knit
  2. Eat and sleep as little as possible in a 36 hour period.
  3. Sell LOTS of yarny goodness.
  4. NOT spend more than I made on yarny goodness.
  5. Profess our LOVE for yarn, fiber, and fiber-philes as much as we could possibly stand it

Mission 1: Lettuce Knit Status: Completed

lettuce knit.JPG

We drove straight to Toronto so the yarn tourist in me could go to Lettuce Knit. That shop is pretty sweet. I bought me some yarn and a Lexie Barnes pouch (for business receipts, of course). It is in an area of Toronto that really reminds me of the ethnic and funky neighborhoods in NYC. Lots and lots of cultures moving in a rhythm that flows together, wraps, unwinds and connects again. I loved it. The difference between this area and the ones that I speak of in the States, is the sheer fact that people live a modestly comfortable existence. There appears to be the feeling of Haight –Ashbury , or Greenwich Village pre-million dollar lofts. I really, really loved it.

That quick jaunt into Toronto was pretty much all I saw of Toronto. The CN Tower on the way in and the way out. The Maple Leafs play hockey in an arena that butts right up against the highway. My god if there is a car accident during a game the player might get injured!

Destination: Sweet Sheep Central.

DSCN04332007-09-08.JPG

I was greeted by the lovely and talented Oscar (who is really named Simon), the guard cat, who put me through another customs check when I walked in the door. (He is VERY chatty… the staunch CA customs officer-lady could learn from him…. She really put us through our paces crossing the border).

Michelle casually gave me a tour of her very lovely home and ended it with the magna carta. The big lebowski… the piece de resistance.

She took me to the store.

Mission 2/3:Profess our LOVE for yarn, fiber, and fiber-philes as much as we could possibly stand it and NOT spend more than I made on yarny goodness. Status: In-Progress

yarntini.JPG

(Yarntini goodness…)

OH.MY.GOD.

I fell to my knees (LITERALLY) at what she has. Stuff I DID NOT KNOW ABOUT HER HAVING. (Disclaimer: she probably mentioned having those yarns. Ask Coleen if I actually listen to my friends when they tell me things ;P )

As I was inappropriately fondling her yarns and digging through her inventory, and thinking of all possible ways to justify MAJOR stash enhancement, I could not believe the sheer bounty of talented fiber artists that are out there. sometimes Mama-E operates in the vacuum of sleep deprivation and occasionally comes out from under the rock in which she makes her home. ( I will do a WHOLE seperate post on the Hand dyers that I adore!)

Michelle tore me away from the yarn to load the car and head for our next mission.

Mission 5: Sell Lots of Yarny Goodness : Part I

We made our way through Toronto traffic and crawled to Kitchener. We unloaded the goods… took stock of our display possibilities… freaked out a tad…… and made a list for Walmart. Delirious and starving (eating is very overrated…) we headed to the big box hell. Blaring fluorescents and processed foods galore. We made our way around the SUPER Walmart at least 2x before we could find the items on the list.

On to the hotel…. and our first major obstacle.

Now… when you make a reservation at a hotel you don’t roll up after HOURS and HOURS of driving (Michelle was on the road at 6 am and picked me up in Buffalo NY) the last thing you expect is for them to say your room is occupied.

WHAT???!!! Occupied? Hmmm… her name on the reservation. Someone else in the room. WTF??

Ok.. there was no way in hell we were sleeping anywhere but there. And the newly employed desk clerk-with-no-backup-help found that out when I let my “Irish” flare up. I actually helped the quivering girl go to our room and check for occupants.

Yeah… turns out…. the moron who worked before her did not check the guests out of the room when they actually left over 12 hours before.

We get into the room… crash and are up about 4.5 hours later.

I shower (very good thing… Michelle has VERY specfic rules for her employees regarding hygiene) and wake her up so she can do the same.

I put a little snack in the microwave. I turn on the coffeemaker (for the hotel LIED about the 24 hour coffee thing) and you hear *POP*…

and then darkness.

Michelle says: “Mama-E, you broke the hotel!!!!”

Now how the hell can I break a hotel fuse??? Come on now… aren’t there at least 100+ people staying there (they told us it was full the night before when someone was supposedly occupying our room)? How the hell can I BLOW A FUSE????

We were at least 30 minutes behind schedule ( with a free hotel stay after I chatted with the morning guest services manager).

Mission 5: Sell Lots of Yarny Goodness Part II Status : Completed

We roll up to the Bingemans and greet the FABULOUS folks at the Kitchener-Waterloo Knitters Guild. We find our space and do the fastest setup known to mankind.

We went from nothing to:

kitchenerbooth.JPG

Sweet! we sold lots… and I even *may* have been asked to sign an autograph…..

Here are some folks with their C*EYE*BER Fiber essentials;

That is LadyLungDoc and crew!! I was so glad to see her again.

It was great to see so many people you read! Thanks Stephanie, Emma, Rachel H and friends for GREAT conversation!

Mission 2/3:Profess our LOVE for yarn, fiber, and fiber-philes as much as we could possibly stand it and NOT spend more than I made on yarny goodness. Revisited

I made out with these amazing buttons. They are hand-made and exquisite! AB Originals from Rockwood, Ontario.

buttons.JPG

I have asked John to make me something special… and if all goes well some of my Christmas shopping is underway!

khaul.JPG

I purchased:

1- fair trade basket

1- 1lb bag of wool/seacell roving

1- 110 g skein of handpainted sock yarn from Lindenhoff Wool Mill.

1- 4oz skein of wool/alpaca laceweight (natural chocolate color) from Lindenhoff

1- thrummed mitten kit ( I was in CANADA People!) from Lindenhoff.

1- 4oz skein of Yarntini varieagated

1 dozen wood buttins

Whew! mission accomplished.

Ongoing Mission: Eat and sleep as little as possible in a 36 hour period

I think …maybe 6 hours of the total 36 we slept. We ate out 1 time… (Subway: my love for you will never die!)

I flew back home ( I miss you already Michelle!) to my family. I missed them terribly!

I was greeted at BWI by my boy and my wonderful husband. It is nice to be home!

DSCN04362007-09-09.JPG

The cowboy had to wear his new Team Canada “soccer boy” outfit (changed in the car!).

Oh! and one last thing….

Michelle says that I never post my knitting anymore.

lopi.JPG

Here is my Fugl in action. I will finish by Rhinebeck. I will finish by Rhinebeck….

I love Kitchener… and thank you to each and every one of you that came out! we had so much fun. See you next year!
