Stash: To BUST or to BUILD? That is the Question!

OK…. I can not keep quiet any longer. What is my position on STASH BUSTING or BUILDING???

Let’s preface this post by saying, I am an Indie businesswoman that loves her little yarn business. I love my clients. I love the process of dyeing. Selling yarn allows me to dye more. (Note:I do use the extra income for more than my fiber addiction).

I love my clients. You rock. You knit with my babies and take them to the next level… the level where they become a garment (or art).

I am hoping that my clients can choose for themselves if they need to bust through some stash. If you think you should stop buying yarn because it is eating into your finances/lifestyle… than you should. Make a personal decision.

I know that I ?should listen?to my?own inner voice. I buy yarn if I can… I?won’t take out a second mortgage if?I can’t. Don’t give away the cat or kid if you can’t feed them, right? (if it was my cat…I may have a hard decision with that one! LOL)

I know that my binge after the diet is much worse that the actual occaisional indulgence.

Enough said. To all of you STASH BUSTERS… I think I can speak for all of us Indie yarn-dyers by saying… see you at 12:01 am the day after Labor Day. Good luck and strength to you.

To all of you STASH BUILDERS…. pssst! I have some candy for you….

Hey everybody? I am back in Charm City (again? go ask the SOAP TURTLE where that is!).

I had a very nice jaunt up to the Tri-State?.( I was in all 3 states ,you know!)

We visited my mother(s), and brother(s) and sister. A few rough nights?of sleep (the cowboy was VERY excited to see his family after such a long time). But? It was a wonderful mini-family vacation. Going home is always so nice for me.

We went to the Sculpture Garden at Pepsi World HQ?.. it is really a beautiful place. The cowboy got to run around under the Caulder Giraffes feed some HUGE Carp and KOI ( I was informed that only the brightly colored fish are called KOI. The brown ones are CARP). He got to play with his neenie and my sister BIRD. (Yes? she has red hair? and yes that is a colorway named after her).

Think that I am in love with him?

or him??? Here are my boys chasing each other around a sculpture…

I love these fish… they were HUGE! I think they look like wise old men. I am going to have to do more with KOI.

Here is an AMAZING stand of trees …. very MAY PS! I thought of you , Lolly!

The last time I visited Pepsi my baby sister and brother were toddlers. This was one of my father?s favorite places in the world. I was so glad to share it with D and the cowboy?. I was a little sad? that Grandpa Tiger wasn?t there to see my cowboy enjoy the grounds as much as he did. I think that my step-mom felt that too. I?did feel that ?he was with us this entire trip (especially when my cowboy walked into my dad?s house and said ?Wook,,, Grandpa Tiger? I don?t think he saw a picture?.)

After the Pepsi venture, we?had a nice lunch in Rye, NY. We did not get to Rye Playland (the training facility for the NY Rangers is there and the last scene from the movie BIG was shot there.)

A fantastic trip? the cowboy was even great in the car. I got to knit a swatch (yes..I said a swatch) for my new concept of log cabin triangles.( I will post pics soon.)

Now? the moment you have all been waiting for?.

Am I Blue???

Filed under: C*EYE*BER Fibers, Sappy Ramblings, knitting — mamae @ 11:55 pm

I am almost to the June -Bug PS finish line. I am so close to done with the girls for the sock clubbers. Here she is if you havent seen her.

?

HPIM0450

I usually get a little wonky after a large run… especially if it is the same colorway. I like her… I keep meaning to save a skein for me.. but I never do.

I keep thinking that there are two types of artists… you know the debate… process or product. I am so about the process. Don’t get me wrong…. I need the product to be visually appealing and well crafted. There is just something about the process of this dyeing that quiets my pretty over-active brain.

I have mentioned that I studied fine arts. I loved my studio time. Me, a big piece of paper with a hefty tooth to it, some charcoal or conte’ crayon, and a boom box. (Yes… we all had boom boxes.) I could spend hours on the thing. At the beginning of the session it felt like the piece was fuzzy and out of focus. With each stroke, each line, each addition and each subraction, my vision would start to clear. And eventually, there would be the moment that you knew it was done. You felt it was done. Instinctually, you knew you had finished whatever you started.

This whole fiber arts road that I am on is really fufilling that need in me. The need to tie myself to something bigger. Creating really is my joy. I forgot that for awhile. I am glad I am remembering now.

So, the Project Spectrum thing. I am so glad my girl Lolly?had the idea. I figure my participation is in the yarn dyeing… I am having a hard time with the keeping up with knitting in the color.? Well, I am having a hard time in keeping up with a lot these days.

I am blue… but in the best of all possible ways. There is a mound of blue yarn waiting to make it’s way to you all….

OH! Speaking of that! I am doing the last run of June Bug tomorrow for the?Sock Club. ?PLEASE let me know if ANYONE wants a single skein of her. I can slip it into the run easily. I am going away for the weekend and want to be set before?I head to Connecticut.

Lost Your MOJO? Knit a Square!

Filed under: C*EYE*BER Fibers, Sappy Ramblings, knitting — mamae @ 4:06 am

I have been reading about the knitting blahs… the loss of the knitting mojo. I, myself, have felt the non-mojoesque like feelings as of late. I have whined… I have *sigh* ed… and now… I am enamoured. I knit a square. Mind you not just any square… a log cabin square from the Mason Dixon Book.

There is something so soothing about the patterns in the book. I am doing a log cabin baby blanket for a friend who is due any minute. Here it is:
I am using cotton fleece by Brown Sheep. It is soooo loveley. Lolly just finished a tank in cotton fleece and inspired me to run over to my LYS and pick some up. I love the way the back looks so neat… not a seam to be found! I like the simplicity of this. It allows me to work out some gauge issues that I have, yet it allows me to watch tv while doing so. Ann and Kay have really brought some things to light for me. I have also been feeling my mojo may lie in the principles of this book:
The patterns are so inspired. I am going to try my hand at some natural dyeing for the patterns in this book. I am so needing to further combine my art with my knitting. That is why I love color so much.?

Once upon a time, Mama-E dreamed of being an artist. I studied art pretty seriously through high school I even went to art school afterwards. I lost my mojo at school.. and took an extended hiatus in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Nope, the mojo was not there. I went back east and kicked around the tri-state area... working in or on the fringe of the art world. I have many, really talented friends that are still working actively in the arts. I considered myself an artist once..and then… the thing with the mojo happened. I abandoned the search and moved to Charm City. (That link is for my soapy friend Laura…go check her out and ask her why!) Now, Charm City has given me so much. For a city that I chose by throwing a virtual dart at a map, I am in love with her. I have found a career that I care about and can be passionate about (depending on my stress level). I have my D and my COWBOY. Enough said. I have a city that is just southern enough for my New York/New Jersey sensibilities ( you can take the girl outta Jersey…but …. ). I have been home for 10 years and think I may be finding the mojo. I found the mojo in the knitting. The act and craft of taking a linear piece of spun fiber and making into a 3 dimensional object (I was a sculptor at heart in school). Now, I throw color into the picture. The act of dyeing and the art of color theory combined with the sculpture of the garment/object have been just what I have been searching for. How do I describe the complete joy I have for this without sounding as if I am a complete whack? Well… I know I am a whack. Enough said. I also find that the act of knitting and spinning have drawn me closer to this feeling of something that has existed since the first person in history created and donned a loincloth or something. Well, maybe not the loincloth. I hope you know what I am trying to get at. It is a connection to history. (OK, I can’t help myself.. HERSTORY). It is a loving connection to my Grammy Irene. Who is now gone but lives in the act of my knitting. It is a smooth connection to my mother that exists even when our interactions aren’t so smooth. It is the common thread (I couldn’t resist!) that ties me (still, couldn’t resist!) to my new friends the sucky knitters. Or Marie…. or Julia….or Ginga So friends, that is why I dye yarn and sell it. I am coming to realize that it is my mojo. It is a constant form of art that is expressed and shared. I get such joy from your emails and your kind words on how much you like it. I love your suggestions for colorways…. I love the challenge of trying to bring your vision to fruition. I also get a kick (still can’t help myself!) that you are wearing my art on your feet. So again, thank you to my village. I know that I am a sap… just roll with it. It’s not every day when a girl gets to find her MOJO again!
